Reflections on January

January is usually a quiet month for me but this year has been different.  So far, there has been no significant snowfall but plenty of mornings of ice and freezing fog.  It follows the same routine of getting up in the dark, leaving the house in the dark, scraping frost off the car in the dark and returning home in the dark.  However, behind the scenes, busy and exciting things have been happening.  As the first month of 2017 draws to a close, it is time to reflect on the progress towards my goals for the year.

My new writing room is nearing completion and it is exactly the space I was hoping to create. The colours give it a modern and relaxing atmosphere.  I have been reading a lot about the writing rooms belonging to professional authors and the benefits of a creative area.  I have enjoyed the process of creating my own workspace. There’s just the carpet left now before everything can be moved back in and the writing can really get back on track.

I have several projects ongoing including a script for the local theatre group, my second novel and this blog. There is also another new project currently at the planning stage.

I’m nearly at 100 followers on Twitter and there will be a new Facebook page coming soon.  It has felt like slow progress but it is surprising how much has been achieved in a short amount of time.

#walk1000miles is continuing. I’ve been drenched, frozen and battered by the elements but every walk has felt like a mini accomplishment as I cross off the miles towards the end result.  It’s been a month of short walks along pavements but I have discovered new streets and found several places in the town which I did not know existed. I’m looking forward to getting back into the mountains especially now I know I will be walking in the landscape that inspired J.R.R. Tolkien.  I’ll never look at it in the same way again after discovering this piece of information while watching a television programme.  The final total for this month is 40.26 miles.  There’s still a long way to go!  The list of places I want to visit is growing and it should give me plenty to write about as this blog continues.

Finally, I will be signing up soon for a new course about freelance writing and journalism.  I am interested in learning the business side of non-fiction writing.  Hopefully, it won’t be too long before I see my name in print in a magazine. Watch this space!
